Thanks. You run Synchronet?

To tell you the honest truth, no! I have recently switched to GNU/Linux for the first time about a week ago (after buying my own computer) and have made the switch to using Firefox about 6 months ago (because it is free software and performs better than Internet Explorer.) After seeing that artwork that you did about Ubuntu (which I have), Firefox and Synchronet, I wanted to learn more about Synchronet. I have not been able to find that much information that is helpful to me due to my lack of understanding. I am guessing that you use or support Synchronet though. Even though I do not use it, would you be able to advise? (Completely off the topic of art, which I normally don't do, so you can ignore this request if you want.)

I'm somewhat confused seeing as the Synchronet Website seems very straight forward. One might even accuse it of being over simplified. The docs are a practical novel but the overview of what it is, where / how to get support, etc.. are clearly defined. So, I'll just give you a basic outline:

(on the left side navigation) Second link from the top, overview:

----------------------------------------------

Synchronet Bulletin Board System Software is a free software package that can turn your personal computer into your own custom online service supporting multiple simultaneous users with hierarchical message and file areas, multi-user chat, and the ever-popular BBS door games.

Synchronet development began as a personal hobby in 1990 for single-tasking MS-DOS compatible computers and Hayes compatible modems. The program was sold commercially from 1992-1996 after which time it was released (with source code) for both the 16-bit DOS and 32-bit OS/2 platforms to the public domain and development by the author was ceased.

In November of 1999, the author found a renewed interest in further developing Synchronet, specifically for the Internet community, embracing and integrating standard Internet protocols such as Telnet, FTP, SMTP, POP3, IRC, NNTP, and HTTP. Synchronet has since been substantially redesigned as an Internet-only BBS package for Win32 and Unix-x86 platforms and is an Open Source project under continuous development.

Synchronet Version 3.1x for Win32 and Unix (Intel-x86 architecture) is available for download now and can be previewed on Vertrauen (Home of Synchronet BBS Software).

----------------------------------------------

Third Link from the bottom, resources:

----------------------------------------------

Resources for Synchronet Sysops

* Synchronet Support (DOVE-Net) via HTTP
* Synchronet Support (DOVE-Net) via NNTP
* Synchronet Support (DOVE-Net) via Gopher (read only)
* Synchronet USENET Newsgroup
* Synchronet Yahoo Group
* Synchronet Web Ring (New)

(The listing above which is properly hyperlinked on the resources page on www.synchronet, where as my list is text only, explains all of the avenues of "official support" where you can talk to quite a few people who would be more than happy to answer all your questions)

The rest of the stuff on the resource page is more or less for once you've got everything setup and have a half way descent idea of how things work, then those things lower down on the page are various tools, sites and services that can render you further assistance. Most of those do not require Synchronet and can be used for most (and in some cases, all) server platforms.

One thing that is linked in several places but I think should be a bit more in the spotlight than it is, is the Platforms Page which explains what Operating Systems Synchronet has been tested on and has been proven to work with: [link]

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Thank you very much for all of that! That was a lot more than I expected, actually! I did go to the website before I contacted you, but I think my mind was a bit tired from learning how to use the Terminal all day in Ubuntu Fiesty! ^-^; Thank you again, and I will look heavily into this for sure! Expect me to contact you at a later date! =D

Yeah well the "front end" of the website is pretty simple and straight forward. Then you get information overload as you read further in. lol

Proof that there is such a thing as too much information. lol

The web interface for my Synchronet Install: [link]

Just know mine has been heavily modded. The defaults ([link]) just like the defaults of anything, aren't the greatest in the world. lol
