Well the pic and the comments are all on the same page. So kinda defaults to it, eh? lol ... yeah and give GIMP ([link]) a try. Don't let being used to Photoshop detour you. GIMP's interface is more *different*, not more difficult. GIMP can also do quite a bit that Photoshop can *not* and more effects plugins have been created (by third party authors) for GIMP than PS (as far as I've seen, anyways).
You are quite right about that! I tried it briefly and found it to be quite nice, especially after considering buying the Adobe Creative Suite 3 Production Edition! *Ouch*

PrincessCallie is a High Schooler so I doubt she'd have the $$ to consider buying something as ridiculously priced as Adobe Creative Suite 3 Production Edition, so she'd likely use BT or some other variation of Internet Piracy. lol .. she already has some version of PS, legally or illegally I've no idea. PS also on occasion will come pre-packaged with a new scanner but it's typically 2 or 3 versions behind what is considered to be current.
I know that when an application is badly needed and / or as a form of civil protest, Internet Piracy can be a nessesary evil. However, a band aid and a cure are two very different things. Piracy is a band aid, open source creative commons works are the cure, really. To create products and services that are superior to the $ expensive % main stream services so that there is no longer a need for them.
GIMP of course will run on Windows or Linux so both worlds can benefit from it. However, there is not very much $ pay $ software within the Linux realm and on the rarity that you run into pay software, the price is usually reasonable.
I'd have to say that about 99% of Linux Applications are obtainable for only 3 low monthly payments of $0.
I've been trying to encourage PrincessCallie as well as others to check out GIMP. Will people do so? No idea but it doesn't hurt to keep suggesting. Maybe I should post some GIMP Screen Captures so the more lazy people out there can get a little preview.
Also -- Windows Users should check out GIMPshop -- it's an addon that makes GIMP have the look and feel of Photoshop. There is no Linux version last I checked, unfortunately. The GIMPshop Mod is purely a Wincrap thing.
Hahaha, I understand your perspective on things here!! Piracy can be a band aid - provided it is not overly exploited. (That is my preference, however. I like to buy things as authentic as possible, even though I could just go and download a movie for free. To me, it just feels better.) Adobe does make very capable and professional grade products, but they are ridiculously overpriced. However, getting them through an education discount brings them down to a more reasonable price that some Windows users may consider buying. (The price difference being about a third of the normal cost.) Having said that, for an open source software product - at only 3 monthly payments of $0.00 - The GIMP is very good for what it is. I have used Adobe Photoshp 7 very briefly, even though it was a pirated version (not my intention as I did not download it), and it was very good for what it was at the time. To pay for the product, on the other hand, makes Photoshop seem a lot less pretty than it really is. The GIMP, as I have found for the past 2 weeks of using Linux, has been just as capable as Adobe Photoshop 7, which is something I did not expect. Though I did know that it was going to be a capable photo manipulation tool, I was not expecting something of such prowess as what I got. Not to mention, of course, was that it came with the AMD64 version of the download version of Ubunutu 7.04. That, my friend, is something that cannot be easily beaten.
If you want to stay cheap, though not BE cheap, The GIMP is the way to go. If you want a more professional tool, honestly, it could actually be a toss up between Photoshop and The GIMP. That is a major accomplishment in and of itself, especially for an open source developed product.
As for Windows users getting screen shots of The GIMP; I think that would be an excellent idea! I do not think that Windows users are lazy and do not want to use or figure out The GIMP, I just think that they do not know it is out there. Most people are completely unaware that the open source community is actually in existence, so showing them a free product will really open their eyes. Not only that, but they would have to learn how to use Adobe Photoshop once they buy it, so learning how to use a free program would not be a problem to them, in my opinion.
