I know that when an application is badly needed and / or as a form of civil protest, Internet Piracy can be a nessesary evil. However, a band aid and a cure are two very different things. Piracy is a band aid, open source creative commons works are the cure, really. To create products and services that are superior to the $ expensive % main stream services so that there is no longer a need for them.
GIMP of course will run on Windows or Linux so both worlds can benefit from it. However, there is not very much $ pay $ software within the Linux realm and on the rarity that you run into pay software, the price is usually reasonable.
I'd have to say that about 99% of Linux Applications are obtainable for only 3 low monthly payments of $0.
I've been trying to encourage PrincessCallie as well as others to check out GIMP. Will people do so? No idea but it doesn't hurt to keep suggesting. Maybe I should post some GIMP Screen Captures so the more lazy people out there can get a little preview.
Also -- Windows Users should check out GIMPshop -- it's an addon that makes GIMP have the look and feel of Photoshop. There is no Linux version last I checked, unfortunately. The GIMPshop Mod is purely a Wincrap thing.

If you want to stay cheap, though not BE cheap, The GIMP is the way to go. If you want a more professional tool, honestly, it could actually be a toss up between Photoshop and The GIMP. That is a major accomplishment in and of itself, especially for an open source developed product.
As for Windows users getting screen shots of The GIMP; I think that would be an excellent idea! I do not think that Windows users are lazy and do not want to use or figure out The GIMP, I just think that they do not know it is out there. Most people are completely unaware that the open source community is actually in existence, so showing them a free product will really open their eyes. Not only that, but they would have to learn how to use Adobe Photoshop once they buy it, so learning how to use a free program would not be a problem to them, in my opinion.
